You make a good point, Tyler. This would be more useful if we included the compiled SWF. I've modified the zip file linked in the article to include the SWF. You should be able to host the SWF on your server and use it as is, although you may also have to modify the buttonX and buttonY positions of the button, depending on your player size. You also may also need to add the location of the SWF to your crossdomain.xml file.

This is great. Is there a way to use this player template without any development? I've taken the BEML from the link provided in this post, created a new template, and the player works with the exception of the custom module button (show/hide playlist). I would really like to avoid paying a developer to perform the seemingly simple work to create the proper swf file to utilize this player.

Thanks.

Tyler

Glad to see this article being used! My apologies for the delay in my response, I will answer both questions here:

Nathan- Yes, it is definitely possible to assign the metadata to the Facebook button in a more dynamic way. You can do this using the Brightcove Media API. Essentially you would look at the ID of the current playing video through the Player API and make a request for the accompanying metadata and write it directly in the Facebook button code. Make sense?

Tyler- I tried your demo at http://rhino.entertainment.googlepages.com/fb_newsfeed_PYSJ_test.html and am not seeing the butterfly image -- are you still having this issue?

Thanks, Chris

It is focused on allowing configurability of the player settings dialog when editing a player instance. The use case addressed is for a customer that has a custom module included with their player that needs customized parameters. Using Design-time BEML, a control for setting these parameters can be surfaced within the player settings.

To elaborate more on this case, we can look at an example implementation of a Google Analytics module SWF. This SWF could be authored to require an account ID. If a publisher creates a template that includes this SWF as a module, they may wish to create multiple instances of the template. Without Design-time BEML, they would be required to append the account ID in the path to the SWF.

<Module file="http://admin.brightcove.com/viewer/swfs/GoogleAnalytics.swf?accountID=12345" />

In that case, every player instance would have the same account. If the publisher wanted different accounts for different players, they would be forced to create different templates. However, with Design-time BEML, a template could be authored in such a way as to surface a text field in the player settings for each instance. The publisher could then enter the account ID for each player and this value would be passed to the Google Analytics SWF once it was loaded into the player.

If you are interested in participating in this beta program please email pmanagement_beta@brightcove.com.

This is a good article and the demo seems to work. Unfortunately I'm not using the super fancy player so most of it breaks down in my scenario.

I would like to have the page refresh when a user clicks on the related videos in the Single player window once the video is done ..... I can't find / guess what that var would be called.

I'm guessing once I know the flash variable it would be easy to get to with this call:

     videoList = exp.getElementByID("videoList");

     relatedList = exp.getElementByID(" ???? ");

Can anybody point me to what the related video element is called ?? I wouldn't mind seeing a list of all the variables available to me ...

Thanks!
