Re: How to SKIP an advert

We have not provided this functionality out of the box because it does not align with the IAB standards for online ads.  We did have a conversation about this recently, however, and have added it to our backlog because of the request from some non-US publishers who do not follow the IAB standards.  That's not to say it'll be done anytime soon, but it is something we're aware of.

As for a custom solution, it depends on what type of ad you're trying to play: video, overlay, something else?  The solution will involve either using an external ad or an ad SWF.

Here's a link to our external ad documentation, which also includes a link to a zip file with external ad examples:

Re: How to SKIP an advert

Hi Brian,

Do you have any sample code for implementing this with video ads inside the player?

We are running pre/post/mid-roll and would like to give users the ability to skip an instream ad.  We are serving ads in via Doubleclick.

Thanks!

Re: How to SKIP an advert

Hi Wil, are you using the regular DFP from Doubleclick or are you using DFP Video and Rich Media (aka Motif)?  I just want to make sure I'm understanding this completely.  If it's the former, then there's a long-standing enchancement request that could fix this.  This is not currently on our schedule, but I'll bring it up again.

I wrote out a long explanation in here about how you could potentially use external ads, showAd(), and resumeAfterExternalAd() to skip an ad today.  But looking more into the code in the player for this, I can see it's not going to work.  Sorry about that.  So I don't have a solution for this right now.

Re: How to SKIP an advert

Hey Brian,

Thanks for getting back to me on this!  We are using regular DFP, not the Video and RichMedia, AFAIK.

Is there not something that could be done with the XML template that DFP has to serve Brightcove ads?  Or some trick to play with the Duration pulled from DFP?

This is kind of mission critical for us to fix - don't mind expending some dev time our end, but need a rough framework of ideas to play with!

Thanks :)

Re: How to SKIP an advert

Hi Wil, I haven't forgotten about this, but I don't have a good answer for you yet.  So far the answer is "we may add an API for this at a later date".  I'm still looking into a possible workaround, but nothing has panned out so far.

Hi Wil, I'm sorry to say but the answer is "we may add an API for this at a later date".  I don't see a way to get this to work right now.  We are trying to get in an API in for this for our next major release but nothing is definite yet.
