What is the iOS version on the iPhone? I tried on iOS 5.0 and things worked. All versions are expected to work but I'm curious if your player might be exposing a bug for a specific version.

Actually the weird part is that on another iPhone v 4.3.5 it plays fine. On mine with v5.0.1 it is still showing as requiring the flash app. Any ideas?

Well, check that - in safari on iphone it is fine on both iPhones. But when viewing in Opera Mini is where the problem is manifesting. I doubt this is your issue but you may check on it.

Ok, that explains everything. We only support Safari on iPhones.
