Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

I am doing my best to configure a custom SWF to track our brightcove player usage with Omniture. I setup Flash CS4 to import ActionSource, and have also set up an external path to the Brightcove API (.swc) in the publishing settings. However, after I made my .swf file and edited a player to use external/javascript API's and specified a path to the .swf, I see no changes or any reference that my custom SWF is being pulled in.

Does anyone have experience hooking Brightcove into Omniture? I'm happy to send code/URL's if necessary. Thanks!

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

Due to some uncertainties in the custom SWF, I decided to troubleshoot this issue using the simple, step-by-step method in the Media Tracking Implementation Guide. There, specifically for Brightcove, I followed steps to install the pre-built Flash movie and XML configuration file for basic video tracking. However, this doesn't appear to be working either. I tried two urls for the swf location, one on our server and one on our cdn. Nothing is working, can anyone offer any insight?

Hi Chris,

Do you have a crossdomain.xml file that allows access from Brightcove? This is the most common reason for a SWF not loading in.

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

Hey Chris, I've been having a similar problem with Omniture and Brightcove players.

I've tried the ActionSourceExtension.swf which locks up the player (player and playlist never loads, can't get to debug output). When I use a custom swf with the ActionScript code supplied, I see the module imported in the player debug console, but never see a call to the metrics server (which is the same domain as my primary domain, and I allow all traffic to any subdomain in the crossdomain.xml file).

The curious part, which may be valid or not, is the debug outputs an interesting URL. If I host the omniture swf on www.asdf.com (for example), the debug output is:  Loaded module http://admin.brightcove.com/[[IMPORT]]/www.asdf.com/video/swf/bcOmniture.swf, which I haven't validated whether that is the correct debug output or not.

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

clayj, I see similar formatting including [IMPORT] in our debug output, and our stats tracking is actually working now. We did have some crossdomain issues, but after lots of troubleshooting, we discovered that there was a case-sensitive variable in the URL string for our analytics swf/configuration xml file (s.configURL= was mistyped as s.configUrl=). Another thing we needed to do before it worked was update our crossdomain file to include the omniture CDN.

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

Hey guys,

I updated the Brightcove documentation (and have asked Omniture to do the same) to emphasize that the URL parameters are case sensitive. The doc update is live at: http://support.brightcove.com/en/docs/using-omniture-sitecatalyst-analytics-solution

I'm not sure that any special crossdomain configuration is needed to allow the Brightcove-Omniture integration to work correctly.

Clay, if you are still having trouble, could you post a link to your test omniture player here for troubleshooting? Or if you aren't comfortable posting that info here, could you submit a customer support request and let them know Emily sent you?

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

if we have developed our own tracking swf fro Omniture, do we still need to create config.xml and pass that into plugin url?

i thought if we are using our own swf, config.xml is not required.

thanks

Re: Custom Analytics SWF with Omniture

I've created a tutorial on how to add a SAINT Classification to Site Catalyst 15, so that you can track Video Title based on Video ID.
